QLD- BIG4 Aussie Outback Oasis Holiday Park Charters Tower
We have really enjoyed our stay in Charters Towers staying at the BIG4 Aussie Outback Oasis Holiday Park .
The Bushman’s Kitchen is a popular meeting area with wood fired pizza night, roast dinner night and bangers and mash night. There is also Live Music on Sunday and Friday afternoons ar the Bushman's Kitchen.
This Holiday Park has a great pool area to cool off in, jumping pillow and rock wall for the kids, cabins, powered and unpowered sites, camp kitchen, shady trees to keep you nice and cool and the park is also dog friendly….. it has everything to keep its campers happy and content during their stay.
We unexpectedly caught up here with some friends that we had met at Mackay. Simon and Wendy are travelling with a caravan and they REALLY loved the BIG drive-through caravan sites. Some of the sites are huge and would definitely be able to accommodate any large van setup.
Charters Towers is a rural town with a population of over 11,600 people, rich in WWII and gold mining history….
Around town, museums and monuments to the gold mining era can be visited, and if you take a drive to Tower Hill, not only is it a fantastic lookout over the Charters Towers township and surrounding landscape, the hill has a wealth of historical sites from both mining and WWII.
In the last quarter of the 19th century Charters Tower boomed with rich gold deposits being mined. It became the second largest city in QLD and was nicknamed “the world” as it offered everything a person could want.
Today the main industries in Charters Towers are agriculture, forestry and fishing.
Around 17km from Charters Towers is Burdekin Weir Park. A picnic area with some really nice views of the weir that spans the Burdekin River.
The towns water supply is pumped from here to the water tank reservoir situated above town on Towers Hill.
Just 21km east of our next camping destination BIG4 Aussie Outback Oasis Holiday Park is Macrossan Park on the banks of the Burdekin River.
Stop off for a photo opportunity of the heritage-listed former railway bridge built between 1896 and 1899 and check out flood level markers of the mighty Burdekin River over the years….pretty amazing to imagine the volume of water flowing through this area during flooding.
The Burdekin River is 740 km long and is one of the major river systems in Australia with a catchment area of 130,000sq km. The Burdekin Delta is a major irrigation area that supplies water to around 38,000ha of sugar cane and other horticulture crops.
Below are photos we took in Part of the mighty Burdekin River in Dalrymple National Park - the dry season…. located around 30 minutes drive from Charters Towers. We can only imagine the amount of water flowing through here in the wet season!
Ravenswood is a gold mining town, historically and currently….. it is located 89km east of Charters Towers in QLD and inland from Bowen on the coast around 190km.
Quite a quirky little rural town with some real interesting things to discover. Two grand old hotels still operate here. The Imperial and the Railway Hotel as well as a general store, museum and other buildings.
If you want a view over the mine, head out to the old cemetery to a viewing platform. This access will be closed if blasting is taking place. The blasting board in town will show the time of any blasting for the day.
Overall, the Charters Towers region is a top place to explore!
